We have three specialist CQC registered care homes for adults who are deaf and have enduring mental health problems. Anthony Edwards House accommodates six service users, Huguenot Place five and Harding House ten.
All three homes have excellent public transport connections and are within walking distance to facilities such as shops, leisure centres and cinemas as well as a variety of local facilities for deaf adults including Old Church, National Deaf Services and an NHS mental health service in Balham which provides a range of services from Social Workers support to Psychotherapy for deaf people.
The care homes encourage independence for each service user, with a view to independent living where possible. There are kitchenette facilities in some service user units to allow a higher level of independence and skill-building. Each service user has an individual Care Plan which is updated and evaluated on a three-monthly basis, in conjunction with the service user.
The homes benefit from the services of a full-time activity officer who arranges a tailor-made activity programme for each service user to support individuals in continuing and beginning new hobbies and interests. Frequent day trips to places of interest are also arranged, plus a longer holiday. Viridian also arranges a weekly Deaf Club at John Morris House, the Wandsworth Community Centre, where deaf people from the care homes and the larger community can meet and socialise together.
British Sign Language (BSL) is the primary language used at the care homes, and all employees are trained in BSL up to Level 2. Besides BSL, care home employees are all highly trained in fire safety, health and safety, medication administration, food hygiene, first aid, mental health awareness, NVQ Care and other specialist training as necessary.
