Subletting – why it matters?
Subletting is a serious issue. We are committed to being fair when it comes to housing and re-housing people and we stick to our rules.
It matters to us:
- when someone is making money by renting out a property which is not theirs to let, often funding lavish lifestyles from the profits.
- that someone is still on the housing waiting list or transfer list because the home they need is being illegally sublet.
- because they are stealing a home from those who need housing the most – people who cannot afford private housing.
Help us stop subletting
We need your help to catch people who are doing it. Your help is so valuable to us that we are offering up to £250 reward for information that helps us recover a home . If you suspect a home near you is being sublet please let us know straight away. Then we can check the tenancy immediately.
What we have done already
We have already evicted more than 30 people for illegal subletting. Residents who are evicted end up with a County Court Judgement placed against their name and have to pay our substantial legal costs.
Recently some tenants who were subletting their properties have given up their tenancy voluntarily to stop this happening to them.
We are already investigating 42 properties. Over the next few months we will be working to identify properties which have been sublet and taking the toughest legal action necessary.
